What is a Physiatrist?
A physiatrist (fi-zē-ˈa-trist) is a medical doctor whose area of expertise is physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). A PM&R physician specialist has completed residency training in the medical specialty of PM&R, and this PM&R physician specialist is a spine, peripheral nerve, muscle, bone and brain expert who diagnoses and treats injuries or illnesses that affect how you function.
How can a Physiatrist help me?
Because of the special training a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician (or physiatrist) receives in medical specialty areas like neurology, orthopedics and rheumatology, Dr. Botner is expert at dealing with multiple systems in the body and disorders that can negatively affect a patient's functional ability. Dr. Botner has distinct diagnostic tools and approaches for evaluating:
• brain injuries
• spine and peripheral nerve problems
• muscle injuries
• tendinitis & bursitis
• various joint problems
Physiatric intervention attempts to investigate and treat the causes for abnormal function, including biomechanical and biochemical factors.
Within circumstances of biomechanical abnormalities, a customized therapy prescription can be tailored to address the identified abnormalities. The physiatrist may also recommend nonnarcotic medication treatment considerations.
